Named by CQ Press as the safest city in Texas and the twelfth safest in the nation, Sugar Land is a family-oriented community that does its best to provide a high quality of life for its citizens. The city, situated 20 miles southwest of downtown Houston, is located directly off US Highway 90, which is accessible from Interstate 59 or Highway 6.

Residents not making the commute to Houston are probably employed by one of the area's the local companies. Fort Bend ISD, which employs over 9,500 people, Fluor Corporation (an engineering company), and Schlumberger Technology Corp. (an oilfields services provider) are some of Sugar Land's the largest employers.

Some of the homes in the area are older, but Sugar Land is continually working to create new developments that will draw in more residents. Currently in the works are 6 major master-planned communities. The houses in these communities can range anywhere from $120,000 to almost 2 million.

Sugar Land's amenities include parks and recreation as well as first class shopping. The city offers its citizens 18 neighborhood and community parks, some of which feature picnic areas, volleyball courts, golf, tennis, and swimming.

Besides outdoor therapy, Sugar Landers can also enjoy retail therapy. Within the city limits are three major retail centers: Sugar Land Town Square includes retail and restaurants, a new city hall, and condos; First Colony Mall is anchored by chains like Dillard's, Macy's, and JCPenney; and Lake Pointe Town Center features residential areas, medical offices, high-end retail and restaurants, and upscale grocer Whole Foods.
