Katy, Texas, is a growing suburb of West Houston.

Katy is located near the intersection of I-10 and Grand Parkway (99), where Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties meet. The city has a total area of 10.7 square miles. But the surrounding "Katy Area" (contiguous with Katy ISD's service area) is closer to 181 square miles.

Current projections put the population over 100,000 within a 3 mile radius, and 170,000 within a 5 mile radius.

Katy was historically an agricultural area, growing rice and soybeans. Now it's the site of one of the country's largest natural gas fields, which has boosted the local economy. Recent development of industrial sites, mostly east towards the "energy corridor," have added to its growth.

According to the city's website, "Katyites" consider the city to be divided into two distinct areas: "Old Katy" and the surrounding "Katy Area." Old Katy, with its historic downtown, sits mostly north of Interstate I-10.

The Katy Area, by comparison, is made up of large swaths of unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend counties mostly east of Old Katy. The Katy Area includes newer neighborhoods in the 77450 and 77494 zip codes, such Cinco Ranch and Grand Lakes; plus older developments in the 77450 zip code, such as Memorial Parkway and Nottingham Country (katytexas.com).

Housing in Katy ranges from apartments and condos to large estate homes with acreage for horses to others with championship golf courses in their backyards. Subdivisions abound with tennis courts, swimming pools, etc.

Katy Mills Mall, located along I-10, features 200 stores and retail outlets, including American Eagle Outfitters, Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave Off 5th, Tommy Hilfiger, Off Broadway Shoes, Guess Factory, J Crew, Loft Outlet and Banana Republic.

Katy ISD's eastern boundary stretches from the energy corridor to a few miles west of Katy. In 2009-10, student enrollment grew to more than 59,000 students and 51 schools, including six high schools.

The city has six public parks, including Mary Jo Peckham Park, with its indoor, heated, swimming pool and barrier-free dressing rooms. The playground contains equipment promoting interaction between disabled and able-bodied kids.
