In 1893, Coppell had only four stores: a lumber yard, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, and a school. Now it has more than 500 businesses. The city is bordered by SH-121 on the north and west and loop 635 on the south.

The Coppell Community Garden, a nonprofit organization, provides community gardens, a farmers market, and environmental education. Coppell has an extensive trail system which borders Denton Creek on the north side of town. It circles the tennis center, the aquatic center, and several parks.
