Conroe, Texas, seat of Montgomery County, is a small suburban city 40 miles north of Houston.

This town of under 50,000 lies in a region of southeast Texas known as the "gulf coastal plains/piney woods" (wikipedia.com). Conroe is the seat of Montgomery County, "the birthplace of the Lone Star flag," and lies within the greater metro area of Houston.

Sam Houston National Forest is the largest geographical feature of the area. One of only four National Forests in Texas, Sam Houston contains more than 160,000 acres between the cities of Conroe, Cleveland, Huntsville, and Richards. The forest allows for hiking and camping, as well as hunting, fishing, and boating. If visitors discover any native artifacts, they must leave them in place and call the ranger's office immediately.

Lake Conroe lies on the western edge of Sam Houston National Forest. The lake is 21 miles long and covers more than 20,000 acres. As the reserve drinking water supply for the City of Houston, there is plenty of calm, clear water for boating, fishing, hunting, golfing, swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, etc. The lake has bluegill, channel catfish, and largemouth bass.

Lake Conroe Park, on the west shore of Lake Conroe, offers 13 acres of barbeque pits, picnic facilities, swimming areas, and fishing piers. There's also a covered pavilion available, a softball field, and sand volleyball. Dogs must wear swimming trunks (i.e. no dogs allowed). Other city parks include Candy Cane Park, off I-45 close to downtown, and Carl Barton Jr. Park, with nine baseball fields, four softball fields, nine soccer fields, and a 10-mile walk/jog trail.
